Broncos' Wade Phillips named NFL's assistant coach of year

Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was recognized as the NFL's assistant coach of the year by the Associated Press on Saturday night.
He won the honor easily, as his 16 votes from 50 voters were twice what second-place finisher Hue Jackson received. This is only the second year the AP has given out the award, so it's the first time Phillips has won it.

The 68-year-old coach was the guiding voice of the best defense in the league. He previously was the Broncos' head coach from 1993-94 and the defensive coordinator from 1989-92. First-year coach Gary Kubiak brought him back to Denver before the 2015 season.
Phillips' simple, aggressive scheme melded perfectly with the talent on this defense. The unit led the league in total defense (283.1 yards per game), passing defense (199.6 ypg), sacks (52) and yards allowed per play (4.4). They ranked third in rushing defense (83.6 ypg) and fourth in points allowed per game (18.5).
Players raved about the Texas native, who found ways to relate to players 40 years younger than him. His defense had four Pro Bowl invitees: cornerbacks Aqib Talib and Chris Harris and outside linebackers DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller. Defensive ends Derek Wolfe and Malik Jackson along with inside linebackers Brandon Marshall and Danny Trevathanwere worthy of a spot in the all-star game, as well. All of them turned in exceptional seasons with the help of Phillips.
